Reflection Statement:
The textile surface pattern design entitled Velvet Blue was inspired by the relationship between tactile texture and visual texture. My intent was to visually communicate a contrast between these two elements, creating an intriguing and visually appealing piece. I chose black velvet as the fabric base onto which I sewed cyanotypes of dried flowers, cut into rectangles, distributing them across the fabric in a deliberate patternI bordered each cyanotype with embroidery, both to enclose it and to establish a barrier between it and the velvet background. In developing this piece, I drew inspiration from artists like Merill Comeau, particularly her exploration of common human concerns through the embellishment of fabric and stitching. However, throughout the process, there were moments where the results did not align with my initial vision. To address this, I experimented with different layouts and stitching techniques until achieving the desired effect. My decision to include cyanotypes stemmed from a desire to incorporate natural elements into the artwork, adding depth and texture. Each flower represented a moment frozen in time, juxtaposed against the lushness of the velvet background. Symbolically, this contrast reflects the interplay between the ephemeral and the enduring.Through making this work, I learned to embrace unexpected outcomes and to adapt my approach accordingly. In the future, I want to delve deeper into techniques for combining different materials and textures.
